The Temperament & Character Inventory
TCI Training for Researchers
Get trained on using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). This program is intended for researchers interested in using the TCI in their work.
Anthropedia has partnered with the Center for Well-Being at Washington University to facilitate the transmission and dissemination of the TCI.
The TCI is one of the most advanced and widely-used personality tests in the world. Dr. C. Robert Cloninger, the Wallace Renard Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Genetics and Director of the Center for Well-Being at Washington University in St. Louis developed the TCI in the 1980s. Since then, longitudinal studies on the TCI have examined the genetic, neurobiological, and developmental underpinnings of human personality. Based on this solid research foundation, the TCI can be used by individuals, coaches, or professionals to guide treatment or interventions; it can also simply be used as a diagnostic tool.
Interested in using the TCI in research ?
You must follow a couple of steps:
The first step is to explain your research to us.
There are thousands of peer-reviewed articles already published on the TCI that explore a wide range of topics. We’re happy to help you use the TCI effectively to explore other topics of interest.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution in the United States, we have strong ethical standards, and we require that the TCI is used in accordance with our mission and code of ethics. For that reason, we do not always grant permission to use the TCI in research. To determine if your research is eligible, you will need to do the following:

Taking the online training
Over the last 10 years, we’ve provided support to thousands of researchers around the world who are interested in the TCI. Whether you have a lot of experience or are a graduate student, this online training ensures that you will understand the 30 years of research and existing data on the TCI. It also guarantees that you will be able to understand how to interpret the scales.
Prior to this training, we spent many hours supporting individual researchers with the information provided in the videos. In order to keep the cost of the TCI low and to protect the integrity of Anthropedia’s mission, we now require all individuals interested in using the TCI to take this training. Instructions for how to access the training will be sent by email after you complete the form above, assuming your research is approved.
Cost of the online training: $250
The base price of the TCI is $15 per test. There are discounts for bulk purchases. Payment plans and financial aid is available for graduate students or those who can demonstrate need.
We are currently developing an exciting new training for clinicians who are interested in using the TCI. This training, which will take place in St. Louis, MO, will introduce clinicians to the full potential of the TCI as a part of an integrative mental healthcare approach. This certification program will help clinicians move beyond the treatment of symptoms and towards the root causes of mental illness.
Please fill out this form if you are interested in using the TCI in your practice, and we’ll contact you with more information about these training opportunities as soon it becomes available.
